High-tech bandits stole cellular telephone numbers of the mayor and the police commissioner and used them to make calls around the world.
Numbers assigned to Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and his security guards were stolen six times this year, a spokeswoman said. Police Commissioner William Bratton's numbers also were stolen six times.Calls to as far away as Bangladesh and India were made, the Daily News said.
Such high-tech theft "is spreading like wildfire across the country," said Stewart Mahoney, director of fraud control for Nynex Mobile Communications, which has the city's cellular phone account.
Mahoney wouldn't say how many times the 2,000 or so cellular numbers used by New York City officials have been pirated.
