The Middle Eastern musical group Kairo by Night will open the Westminster College concert series for 1994-95 with a performance Saturday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Jewett Center for the Performing Arts.
Combining traditional Middle Eastern folk tunes with original compositions, the group mixes ancient and modern instruments with a variety of musical influences. It was organized in 1986 after many years as the accompanying ensemble for the Aziz Dance Company.The group features dancers Vashti Zadah and Gigi Grubaugh, along with instrumentalists Dave Weisenberg, Paul Grubaugh, Lauren Flygare, Nazera Sheya, Nora Godin, Brett Bowen and Howard Clough. Their program Saturday will include "Nazira," "Zarefa," "Shani Meara Nejat" and "Ah Ya Zain," among other selections.
