2 DEPARTMENT CHAIRMEN TAKE HELMS AT BYU

President Rex E. Lee has announced the appointment of two new department chairmen at Brigham Young University.

Heikki Rinne is chairman of the Institute of Business Management in the Marriott School of Management, replacing Scott M. Smith, while Gerald Armstrong is chairman of the department of mathematics in the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, replacing Peter Bates.Rinne's appointment was effective this past spring, while Armstrong's appointment began in August.

A professor of business management, Rinne joined the BYU faculty in 1984 and is a former director of both the Skaggs Institute of Retail Management and the Executive MBA Program. His research specializations include retailing, strategic planning and international business.

Armstrong's research and teaching interests include classical integration and differentiation theory, mathematical models in medicine and calculus reform.

The associate chairman of the BYU department of mathematics from 1992-1994, Armstrong joined the BYU faculty in 1970.
