A British gynecologist will face a trial for performing a hysterectomy and removing an 11-week-old fetus from the womb of a woman unaware she was pregnant, officials said Friday.
Doctors had told the woman, Barbara Whiten, she was infertile.Reginald Dixon is to appear before magistrates in central England on Nov. 16 on charges of performing an illegal abortion on Whiten in March 1993.
Whiten, 35, had been trying to have children for many years but agreed to a hysterectomy to relieve pain in her womb after doctors told her she was infertile.
Following the operation, Dixon told her he had removed an 11-week-old male fetus.
Local police investigated the case and then passed it to the Crown Prosecution Service, the last word on controversial cases.
Dixon will be charged under the Offenses Against the Person Act, passed in 1861.
