COMMON ITEMS MAY BE OLDER THAN YOU THINK

Many common objects are older than you think.

For example, the safety pin was patented in 1849 by Walter Hunt, and earmuffs were invented in 1873 by Chester Greenwood of Farmington, Maine. Barbed wire goes back to 1874 and the corncob pipe to 1869.Other items invented in America before the turn of the century include: the rolltop desk, 1850; the apple peeler, 1803; and the ice cream freezer, 1848.

Golf tees were patented in 1899, ice cream sundaes first appeared in Ithaca, N.Y., in 1897, chop suey was first made, not in China, but in New York City in 1896, and the electric chair was first used for an execution in 1890 at Auburn, N.Y.
