BANKRUPT UTAHNS CAN GET CHAPTER 7 FEE WAIVED

Bankrupt Utahns who can't afford the $160 fee required to take out a Chapter 7 liquidation bankruptcy can have the fee waived beginning Oct. 1.

The District of Utah U.S. Bankruptcy Court is one of six courts participating in a three-year pilot program to see how the fee waivers affect bankruptcy filings.Under the program, those unable to pay the filing fee in full or in installments may seek a waiver. Bankruptcy court officials will use the same standard in deciding whether to waive the fees that federal court officials use to decide whether someone is too poor to afford an attorney.

If the court denies the application, the debtor must pay the fee in full or in installments.
