A contract worker was killed at the Kennecott Copper smelter Saturday afternoon, said a Salt Lake County sheriff's office spokesman.
Killed was:Loris Salazar, 35, Monument Valley.
Salazar died about 2:45 p.m. after a crane lifting metal pipes malfunctioned and dropped the load on his head, said Sgt. Jim Vaughn. The pipes trapped Salazar's head against some metal I-beams.
The plant's medical personnel tried unsuccessfully to revive Salazar. He died at the scene, according to Vaughn.
