HILTON TO HOST 2ND-PLACE WINNER IN BACHAUER PIANO COMPETITION

Armen Babakhanian, second-prize winner in the 1991 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, will lead off a season-long series of eight classical and jazz programs with a recital Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 8 p.m. in the ballroom of the Salt Lake Hilton, 150 W. 500 South.

The series, called Bachauer In-Betweens, is being sponsored by the Bachauer Foundation and KUER-FM. Besides Babakhanian, it will offer three more classical programs, consisting of British pianist Martin Jones (Nov. 2), a Bachauer Gala (Feb. 11) and 1994 Bachauer bronze medalist Filippo Gamba (April 5), along with four jazz artists, Alan Broadbent (Oct. 5), Adam Makowicz (Jan. 11), Bill Mays (March 1) and Walter Norris (May 10).An all-series pass is $50, classical-only or jazz-only series passes are available for $30, with individual tickets priced at $10.

The Feb. 11 gala, to feature former Bachauer competitors and prize-winners Angela Cheng, Alan Chow, Alvin Chow, Alexis Feo Fernandez, Douglas Humpherys, Anthony Padilla, Colette Valentine and Eugene Watanabe, will take place at Abravanel Hall. All other concerts will be at the Hilton.

Babakhanian's program will include sonatas of Bartok and Prokofiev (No. 4), Morton Gould's "Ghost Waltzes," the Bach-Busoni D minor Chaconne and music of Chopin and Arno Babajanian.
