POSTAL WORKERS GET HIT WITH AN OLD EXCUSE

Some postal workers did not get paid on time last week because their checks got lost in the mail, postal officials said Monday.

About 1,500 employees at St. Louis' main post office faced a payless payday because their paychecks were lost somewhere between Minneapolis, where they are printed, and the mail sorting center at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. The checks were part of a batch of about 4,000 mailed to employees in St. Louis. When postal officials realized the checks were missing, they arranged for new checks to be flown from Minneapolis later Friday aboard another regularly scheduled flight.

Some employees on later shifts were told they could pick up their checks when they came to work.
