CONDITIONS LOOK FAVORABLE FOR OPENING OF 1994 ELK SEASON

The 1994 elk season will open Wednesday.

The general feeling is that hunters will do well on the hunt this year. Elk numbers are stable in most areas and even up in a few, and current range conditions, with the recent rain, are good. There are still several thousand elk permits available to hunters. Last week, counts showed that of the 40,000 made available there were still 7,000 permits left.

There was some confusion caused this past summer over eligibility for big game hunts. It was first announced that sportsmen would be allowed to have only one big game permit. That was later changed to allow sportsmen to go on two hunts, but not two of the same hunt. So, a hunter can, for example, go out on both the deer and elk hunts.

The hunt will open Wednesday and run through Oct. 18.
