The City Council has approved the purchase of property in northwest American Fork for a city park.
Developers will donate about half the land for a three-acre park at 850 N. 250 West. The city will buy the remainder for $35,000 an acre. About 200 homes are being built in the area.Council members wondered at Tuesday's meeting whether the park would satisfy the neighboring Hillcrest subdivision's desire for a park.
Mayor Jess Green and Councilman John McKinney decided it would not. McKinney said 1120 North would some day become a busy thoroughfare, making it difficult for pedestrians to cross. He said he's pursuing other areas in the neighborhood for a park.
Green suggested the city work with Alpine School District to construct a park in conjunction with a new elementary school to be built north of American Fork Junior High School.
"That may be one of the only opportunities we have to develop a park in that area," he said.
