An Orem High School assistant principal committed suicide at his home Wednesday night, police said.
Scott Bowles, 43, shot himself about 10 p.m. while his wife was on the telephone to police, said Orem police spokesman Sgt. Gerald Nielsen.Bowles' wife tried to talk him out of suicide and then called police when he went to the back yard with the shotgun, Nielsen said.
Bowles had recently moved to Orem from Salt Lake City.
The Orem school has been hit by a series of tragedies recently. Two students were killed and several others injured in a head-on collision Sept. 18, bringing to 12 the number of Orem High students who have died in the past year.
