YOUTHS LIKELY TO BE BANISHED, TLINGIT JUDGES SAY

Several grim-faced Tlingit judges said Friday it was all but certain that banishment will be the punishment for two American Indian youths who nearly killed a pizza delivery man with a baseball bat last summer in Washington state.

If that occurs, 17-year-old Adrian Guthrie and Simon Roberts will spend the next 18 months of their lives on an uninhabited Alaska island, where they will be expected to live off the land in lonely isolation."They will be banished. We have already made that decision days ago," said Richard Dalton, one of the more prominent judges on the Kuye'di Kuiu Kawaan tribal court, which represents at least nine of the 32 Tlingit tribes.
