- NFL football: The season kicks off with four games - Chiefs at Saints (11 a.m., Ch. 2); Vikings at Packers (11 a.m., Ch. 13); Cowboys at Steelers (2 p.m., Ch. 13); and Chargers at Broncos (6 p.m., TNT).

- Victory Over Violence (2 p.m., Ch. 2): Walter Cronkite hosts this excellent two-part, four-hour documentary about the war on crime.

- The Simpsons (7 p.m., Ch. 13): The season premiere is a witty, funny episode in which the Simpson kids gain a pool - and sudden popularity. But then Bart breaks his arm.

- The Jerry Lewis Telethon (7 p.m., WGN; 10:30 p.m., Ch. 4): Runs through Monday at 5 p.m.

- Mission of the Shark (8 p.m., Ch. 5): Good fact-based 1991 TV movie about the tragic sinking of an American warship at the end of WWII. (Repeat)

- Ape Man (6 p.m. and 10 p.m., A&E): Walter Cronkite narrates this four-part documentary about evolution.
