Volunteers are needed to baby-sit children while their parents take English as a second language classes.
Volunteer sitters are needed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Dixon Middle School in Provo. Volunteers can select their own schedules.Individuals will supervise the children while the children's parents are in class. The children may or may not understand English.
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. They are asked to make a commitment of four months or one semester.
Many of the parents would not be able to attend ESL classes without the baby-sitting service.
The ESL program is conducted through Provo Adult High School.
Also, volunteers are needed to tutor a student from Haiti in English grammar and writing. Shifts are available from 10 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. Tutoring sessions will take place at Utah Valley State College's Provo campus. Knowledge of French or Creole would be helpful but is not required. Volunteers must be high school graduates.
Additional volunteer opportunities are available throughout Utah County. They include:
- Help low-income individuals with car repairs. A volunteer, on-call mechanic is needed to help repair cars for low-income people who cannot afford to repair their cars on their own. Volunteers must be at least 18.
- Speak about preparedness and health and safety issues. Volunteers are needed to conduct various presentations on behalf of the Utah County chapter of the American Red Cross. Various volunteer times are available. Training will be provided for volunteers. Volunteers must be a least 18.
- Discuss issues of abuse with schools and organizations. Volunteers will be receive training and will work flexible hours. Volunteers must be at least 16, unless a child was a victim of abuse and wants to share his or her story.
