Unisys in Salt Lake City has won a $6.4 million contract from the Air Force to help develop a system to more quickly transfer intelligence data from satellites and aircraft.
Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, who announced the contract, said it could help use such data for immediate precision targeting by weapons."This will allow point-to-point satellite relay communications on a global basis," Hatch added, "Unisys has also teamed up with Time-Warner to explore the use of its high-speed digital transmission technology in the entertainment industry."
Hatch noted that Unisys is the state's major recruiter of young electrical engineering graduates from Utah schools.
"It's my understand that Unisys can't fill all the vacancies for electrical and software engineers," he said. "The problem is that we can't produce the young people fast enough. But that's not a bad problem to have."
