CAPTION ONLY: STACK'S DAYS ARE NUMBERED

Kennecott Utah Copper's smokestack will soon be coming down as work progresses on the new $880 million smelter and modernized refinery. The project is the largest private investment ever undertaken in Utah and should be completed ahead of schedule by April 1995, said spokeswoman Alexis Fernandez. Kennecott officials say the smelter will be one of the cleanest operating worldwide, capturing 99.9 percent of the sulfur contained in the concentrate feed.
