Just when Woods Cross coach Kevin Rigby and his stubborn Wildcat team thought they had seen enough of overtime games, along came the Leopards of East.

Although it was Woods Cross that had to battle back to tie the game in regulation, East refused to die against the second-ranked Wildcats by forcing the game into two shootouts before falling 2-1 at Sunnyside Park Tuesday. The win for Woods Cross was its first overtime victory in three tries with earlier heartbreak losses in the preseason against 5A schools Brighton and West Jordan.

Despite the dramatic ending, reaching overtime was almost avoided by East, which held a 1-0 lead until the 77th minute of the game. Leopard halfback Meredith Lake sped past WX goalkeeper Jenny Waldron to make it 1-0.

From there Woods Cross began to build an attack but could not outpace East stopper Becky Hull, who made a brilliant defensive show against the Wildcats.

"I almost thought we cooked our own goose with their first goal," Rigby said. "We had pressure but were unable to finish the shots." One finished shot was good enough for Rigby as sophomore Katie Langdon headed a loose corner kick by Shannon Webb into the East net.

East escaped the Wildcats' shooting barrage in overtime to force the game into a shootout. Goalkeepers Waldron and Sara Delozier of East supplied the thrills with the first round ending in a 3-3 deadlock.

In the sudden-death round, both squads sent five different players to the penalty line to end the Region 7 deadlock. Once again Waldron and Delozier stepped up with five combined blocks before Wildcat Vicki Brooks shot the final goal.

"A good goalkeeper always loves shootouts," Rigby said, "and Jenny really loves them."
