Releasing fish has always been a part of fishing. Following are some tips on the proper handling of fish.
- Fish should be played and landed as quickly as possible to reduce exhaustion stress, especially if water is fairly warm.- Don't squeeze the fish or put your fingers in the gills.
- Keep the fish in the water as much as possible.
- Artificial flies and lures will make it easier to remove the hook since fish caught with these lures are normally hooked on the lip. If the fish is deeply hooked, it is best to cut the leader rather than trying to get the hook out. The hook will decompose in time.
- To revive an exhausted fish, hold it gently in an upright position facing upstream and move it slowly back and forth to move water through its gills.
