Understanding violent threats to children will be the focus of the Utah Conference for Child Safety Sept. 30-Oct. 1.

Co-sponsored by Southern Utah University, the two-day conference will be held in the Cliff Lodge at the Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort. Other co-sponsors are Utah's Children, Youth, and Family Council and Snowbird Life Enrichment.The conference is designed especially for physicians, law-enforcement personnel, educators, social workers, health-care professionals and parents. Enrollment is limited.

Among the topics for discussion are child pornography and illegal drugs associated with sexual abuse, child molesters and pedophile groups and how the mass media influence child sex crimes.

Registration deadline is Saturday, and the cost is $75. An optional one credit hour of university credit is available for an additional $20. Opening speaker for the conference will be Michael Medved, film critic and author of "Hollywood vs. America." He will discuss "The Film Industry and Its Responsibility to Our Children."
