CASES OF ARTHRITIS EXPECTED TO JUMP TO 59 MILLION BY 2020

The epidemic of the future will be arthritis unless appropriate action is taken now to limit the impact of the ailment, says the Arthritis Foundation.

Citing new projections released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the foundation predicts the number of people with arthritis will increase from 40 million in 1994 to 59 million by 2020.The forecast is based in large part on the aging of the baby boom generation, according to the foundation, which explained that the prevalence of arthritis increases rapidly after age 45.

The foundation suggests people avoid excess weight gain or lose excess weight - especially during middle age - to reduce the risk of developing knee osteoarthritis.

It also recommends taking precautions to avoid joint injuries.
