WTA COMMISSION SEEKING INCREASED AGE RESTRICTIONS

The Women's Tennis Council agreed in principle to the major recom-mendations of the Age Eligibility Commission, raising age requirements and reducing the number of tournaments youngsters may play.

Among the major steps is increasing to 18 the age a player must reach before being allowed to compete without restrictions on the WTA Tour. Currently a player may begin unrestricted play at age 16. Also, 14-year-olds will not be allowed to compete in WTA Tour events and will be limited to four ITF Futures events.
