People in San Francisco may still prefer Joe to Steve.

But the money goes with Steve Young and the 49ers when they go to Kansas City in their first meeting against Joe Montana since he was traded.Impressive as Montana and the Chiefs were in winning at New Orleans Sunday, San Francisco and Young were even better in their 44-14 win over the Los Angeles Raiders Monday night. So the 49ers are 21/2-point favorites over Montana and the Chiefs, whose secondary gave up 326 yards to Jim Everett at New Orleans.

"Being realistic about it, I want to win the game as bad as they want to win it," Montana said. "But it's one of 16 games on the schedule. I haven't seen a team in a long time go undefeated and win the Super Bowl."

A hunch: Don't believe him.

Yes, after a week, the 49ers and Cowboys seem to be way above everyone else in the NFL.

Yes, San Francisco's defense has been seriously upgraded.

But . . .

This is a special game to Montana, and Montana is special in special games. If the Kansas City defense doesn't give Young the time to pass that the Raiders allowed . . . CHIEFS, 27-26.

Denver (plus 3) at Jets

Beware the Jets the week after a big win. On the other hand, does anyone play defense for Denver? JETS, 47-36.

Houston (plus 14) at Dallas

Bucky Richardson may be the quarterback for the Oilers.

The Cowboys may play "Name That Score." COWBOYS, 41-8.

Pittsburgh (plus 2) at Cleveland

The Steelers have won only one of their last 12 games at Cleveland. But after Dallas, anything's easy. Score one for the law of averages. STEELERS, 20-11.

Detroit (plus 41/2) at Minnesota

Jake Reed and Qadry Ismail got Dennis Green's word this week: Catch the ball or look for work. They catch. VIKINGS, 24-11.

Indy (plus 11/2) at Tampa Bay

Seattle (plus 7) at Raiders

A not-so-easy rebound for the Raiders. RAIDERS, 20-16.

Wash. (plus 81/2) at New Orleans

Norv Turner won't say it, but his revolving-door approach reminds you of Jimmy Johnson's first (1-15) season. Guess who Turner's mentor is? SAINTS, 31-10.

Cincinnati (plus 9) at San Diego

Junior Seau won't have to be in the right place in the final minute. CHARGERS, 28-16.

Monday night

Chicago (plus 31/2) at Philadelphia
