FIRE NEAR ROCKPORT THREATENS CABINS BEFORE BEING STAYED

A fire that broke out about noon Thursday between Wanship and Rockport Reservoir came within 75 feet of a group of cabins Thursday afternoon before being stayed by helicopter water drops.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, dubbed the Buzzard Fire, which had burned 400 acres at the bottom of Alexander Canyon by Friday morning. Some 50 firefighters fought the fire Thursday with the help of helicopters and air tankers.The fire was 85 percent contained by Thursday night and was expected to be fully contained by late Friday.

And in western Tooele County near Wendover, 235 firefighters had the month-old Reilly Canyon fire 80 percent contained Thursday night and anticipated fully containing the blaze by late Friday.

The fire has burned 3,083 acres in a wilderness study area that contains the country's oldest stand of bristlecone pine trees, which are nearly 2,000 years old.
