Suspected Muslim extremists shooting into vehicles killed eight police and three civilians in coordinated attacks in southern Egypt.
The deaths brought to 25 the number killed over the past week in a stepped-up campaign against police by extremists around the town of Mallawi.In Monday's attacks, groups of gunmen stopped some vehicles before opening fire and raked others with bullets as they drove along a highway near Mallawi.
The Interior Ministry statement reported eight police and three civilians killed in four attacks. Local police said earlier in the day that eight people were killed and four wounded in three attacks.
