A boy trapped in a muddy culvert for three hours Thursday night was treated for hypothermia at an area hospital.

Vernon Fox, 11, West Jordan, was walking with friends through a construction site near 1650 W. 7450 South at about 6:15 p.m. when he attempted to jump the culvert."He was going to jump across it and the sides caved in and sunk him down. Whenever he would move he would sink further and further. It was like cement. He was encased in the stuff," said West Jordan Fire Lt. Paul Price.

Fox's two friends tried to free him for about 90 minutes before fetching his father who called 911.

Price said the boy was sunk to his waist in the mud. A ladder was placed over the culvert and seven firefighters worked using ropes, digging Fox out by hand.

A new subdivision is being built on the site and the culvert was near water lines.

"He's lucky he's a big kid and had friends with him," Fox's father said.
