Dax Rapp had plenty to think about as he sized up a 29-yard field goal with 15.3 seconds to play Friday. A successful kick meant victory, city bragging rights and second place in Region 2 for Bountiful. A miscue gave all the accolades to rival Viewmont.
"You have to remain confident and put that stuff aside," Rapp said after nailing the game-winner - lifting the Braves to a 24-21 triumph. "As soon as I hit the ball, I didn't look up. That was it."The kick capped a run of 24 unanswered points by fourth-ranked Bountiful, which overcame a 21-0 deficit.
"It was clutch deals," said Bountiful coach Larry Wall. "We put ourselves in a hole. We were out of sync at the start. I really have to hand it to Viewmont. They had a great game plan and took it to us."
While scoring touchdowns on their first three possessions, the Vikings proved equally as effective on defense - forcing Bountiful to punt, throw an interception and hand the ball over after a loss on downs.
"I wasn't surprised," said Viewmont coach Ross Harris. "We felt all week we could do it."
Quarterback Drew Wight teamed with Brian Jackson on a 3-yard scoring strike to cap Viewmont's initial series. Less than five minutes later, following an interception by Greg Mooney, Brent McFarland increased the Viking lead to a pair of touchdowns with a 1-yard run.
Leading 14-0 after one quarter of play, Viewmont reached the end zone again in the second frame when Wight connected on an 18-yard pass to Brandon Wood with 4:14 remaining.
Enter a momentum shift.
Bountiful began its resurgence just before the intermission when Jamison Stark pulled down a 25-yard touchdown pass from Wes Patterson in the final 40 seconds of the half.
The comeback continued in the second half with the Braves converting on third down situations (12 of 15 for the game) offensively and applying increased pressure defensively.
An interception by Jerod Parkinson set the stage for Bountiful's next score. Patterson capped an 11-yard series with a 1-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. The Braves pulled even with 5:26 left to play when Patterson connected on 29-yard touchdown pass to Pat Williams on a fourth-and-17 situation.
After forcing Viewmont to punt on the ensuing series, Bountiful spent the last 3:28 moving into field goal range for the game-winner.
