A Roman Catholic nun, flouting the biblical injunction "Thou shalt not steal," has been caught shoplifting gift coupons that she removed from pots of yogurt and hid under her habit.
Il Messaggero newspaper reported Wednesday that the incident took place in a supermarket in the small town of Carsoli in central Italy. An employee noticed the 60-year-old nun pushing a trolley filled with yogurt through the aisles, then arriving at the check-out with completely different items in her cart, the daily said.
Checking the aisles, the employee found the yogurt-laden trolley abandoned and noticed that the attached coupons, which the manufacturer will exchange for gifts, had been removed.
Confronted, the nun confessed that she had taken the coupons and produced them from under her habit. The newspaper said she told the store she had wanted the gifts for children attending nursery school at her convent.
The supermarket did not press charges, it said.
