Utah's top amateur golfers took a commanding lead over Arizona after the first day of matches at the fifth annual Utah-Arizona Shootout.

Utah's 12-person contingent grabbed a 23 1/2-12 1/2 lead at the halfway point of the Ryder Cup-like competition at Willow Creek Country Club. The Shootout was to conclude Monday afternoon with 12 individual matches.The top point-getters for Utah Sunday were Mark Domm and Scott Fairbanks, who defeated Bob Martin and Rudy Beruman 3-0 in the Foursome competition and beat Martin and Erik Nielsen 3-0 in the Four Ball. In Foursomes, players hit alternating shots, while Four Ball is best-ball format.

Doug Bybee and David Cannon also won twice, defeating Bill Camping and Curtis Maynard 2-1 in Foursomes and the same duo 2 1/2-1/2 in Four Ball.

Utah's two women, Terry Norman-Hansen and Marie Needham defeated Allyson Jennings and Etsu Suzuki 2 1/2-1/2 in Foursomes but lost by the same score in Four Ball.

Among the seniors, Utah's Arlen Peacock and Jack Noble defeated Bill Brafford and Joe Riordan 2 1/2-1/2 in the morning and drew 1 1/2-1 1/2 in the afternoon.
