The top-ranked Morgan Trojan volleyball team proved worthy of its vaunted ranking Friday afternoon with a 16-14, 15-7 victory over second-ranked South Summit to win the Region 12 tournament.
The win gives Morgan the region's top seed in next week's 2A state tournament at North Sevier High School. The Trojans, who were upset in last year's state championship game by South Summit, open against third-ranked North Sevier, while South Summit meets Parowan.Manti grabbed third place in the tournament with a 15-12, 7-15, 16-14 triumph over North Summit, thanks to the standout play of Shawna Rasmussen and Star Peterson.
The Templars face Beaver in its first state match, while North Summit squares off against Monticello.
Region 13 Tournament
At San Juan, the surprising Monticello Buckaroos grabbed the region tournament crown by shocking Beaver 15-13, 6-15, 15-7.
Tournament Most Valuable Player Carley Garner dominated the net play for Monticello, which finished in fourth place during the regular season. Teammates Lucy Tracy and Tori Allred also made the all-tournament team.
Parowan, which placed fifth in the regular-season final standings, upended regular-season champion North Sevier 17-15, 6-15, 15-9 to claim the region's third-place seed into the 3A tournament.
Region 14 Tournament
Third-ranked Intermountain Christian completed a perfect region season with a 15-12, 15-5 victory over Salt Lake Lutheran to win the region tournament title.
Alison Stearly had 12 kills to lead the offensive attack for the Lions, who finished the regular season at 12-0. Amy Shogren added 43 sets for ICS.
ICS enters next week's 1A tournament as the No. 1 seed from the region, while the Lynx are second.
Manila defeated Wasatch Academy 15-8, 15-8 to win the third-place match. Other region teams that qualified for the state tournament are Salt Lake Christian Academy, Waterford and Dugway.
