A 27-year-old man has been charged with the armed robbery of a senator's wife and a former senator's wife in downtown Washington last weekend.
Teresa Heinz, wife of Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Wren Wirth, wife of former Sen. Tim Wirth, D-Colo., were leaving a theater Saturday when they were accosted by a man who demanded their purses.Heinz surrendered her purse, but Wren Wirth didn't notice the assailant had a gun and shouted for help, according to police. A car stopped in response to the shouting, and the gunman fled. The women were unhurt.
John Kenney of Washington was arrested Wednesday on the basis of a car description and partial license plate number, said District of Columbia Deputy Police Chief Charles Bacon.
Kenney was charged with armed robbery. Bacon said Kenney has been arrested on drug-related charges in the past.
