Harry Barnhart, a musician, operatic singer and vaudeville performer, first popularized community singing - mass singing by crowds - in the United States.

Before World War I, Barnhart, who had discovered that pepole love singing together, formed a community chorus in Rochester's Convention Hall.

Later, he led choral groups in New York City, often attracting crowds of 15,000 in public parks, as community singing grew in popularity.
