Delta claimed yet another state title and set a record in the process Saturday at Southern Utah University.
The Rabbits won their first 3A state championship by knocking off Region 11 rival Emery 15-5, 15-11. The victory gave Delta an unprecedented eighth state volleyball title to put in an already overcrowded trophy case. The Rabbits had previously been tied with Weber for the most volleyball titles at seven, all coming when Delta was in the 2A ranks.
Winning gave Delta, the Region 11 champion this year, its third win in as many tries against a young Emery team. But unlike most of its wins this year, Delta used a collective effort for the championship.
"Throughout the season there has always been one girl that stepped up to help us win a match," said Delta head coach Jeanette Larson. "Tonight, all six stepped up."
On the other side of the spectrum, Emery coach Nancy Martinez felt her team played a bit too "careful" in its quest for the school's first volleyball title.
Richfield completed the Region 11 domination of the tournament with a third place finish. The Wildcats rallied from down one game to knock off Region 10 champion Wasatch 8-15, 15-13, 15-7.
Lehi wrapped up a fifth-place showing with a 15-8, 8-15, 15-13 victory over Region 10 rival Union, which finished sixth.
