MHTN Architects, a 72-year-old architectural firm housed in the historic Newhouse Building, has been named Small Business of the Year by the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and will be honored during the chamber's annual meeting at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Little America.

The award is sponsored by the chamber and Equitable Life and Casualty Insurance Co. to recognize a business for continued growth, innovation of product and community involvement.In less than 10 years, MHTN's gross billings increased from $791,000 annually to $8 million, and this year billings are expected to be more than $10 million, making it the largest architectural firm in the Intermountain area. Since 1991, the staff has increased from 30 to 94, and in the past three years MHTN has merged with three local design firms with expertise in new market areas.

Principals in the firm are Lynn A. Jones, Don Bingham, Bryce C. Jones, William V. Nelson, William A. Hoster and Fred Montmorency, who is celebrating 40 years with the firm.

Also scheduled to be honored during the meeting are seven people who served on the board of governors for three years each.

They are Kenneth Y. Knight, Sinclair Oil Corp., who was board chairman from July 1, 1994, to June 30, 1995; David Boyles, American Express; Mickey Gall-i-van, Harris and Love Advertising; Sam Guevara, Art House Graphic Studio; Phil Jones, Park City Ski Area; Ramona Rudert, Professional Automotive Equipment; and Thomas K. Sieg, Gastronomy Inc.

Seven people or companies will be honored for their volunteer work on behalf of the chamber.

Receiving the Longevity Award will be Questar Corp., parent company of Mountain Fuel, for their support of Utah Business Week and many other chamber activities. First Security Bank will receive the Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Award for its sponsorship of the opening night social at Business to Business Expo and many other activities.

Five of the chamber's council also will present awards. The Special Projects Council award goes to Margaret Hunt of Utah Power; Communications Council to Skip Branch of Harris and Love Advertising; Government Relations Council to Frank McCullough, McCullough, Jones Land Co.; Business Development Council to Howard Nakagama, Christopherson Travel; and Membership and Marketing Council to Dick Crookston, retired employee of KUTV.
