AFTERTHOUGHTS

In the middle of the budget debate last week, Clinton's press secretary McCurry said the Republicans wished that senior citizens would all die. Untrue, says Gingrich. So, you see - the Republicans are willing to compromise.

- President Clinton made a solemn promise to veto that budget. Considering some of his past promises - I'd say the thing is as good as law right now.- They are dismantling 60 years of social programs begun under Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose memorial, ironically, is now under construction in Washington. When it opens, it will be dedicated to the memory of Herbert Hoover.

- The budget illustrates the class-division between the two parties and, oddly, they call it a reconciliation bill. It's more like a reconciliation of Elizabeth Taylor and Larry Fortensky.
