SHARE TOOELE VOTERS OUST COUNCIL INCUMBENT OLDROYD

Voters gave top honors to a political newcomer, Charlie Roberts, while ousting veteran politician Karen Gowans Oldroyd in Tuesday's City Council primary election.

A crowd of 16 candidates were vying for the right to contest the three at-large council seats. Ten were eliminated.Many of the candidates focused on the issue of growth. A number said the recent housing boom was the chief issue facing voters.

In an earlier interview, Roberts said he previously had not involved himself much in city politics. "I've laid low in the past and now it's time to get involved." He collected 916 votes in final but unofficial tallies.

On the other hand, Oldroyd is a two-term incumbent. She ended up in ninth place with 327 votes.

Besides Roberts, candidates advancing to the general election are John K. Cluff, with 830 votes; Larry Silcox, 496; Louis Killpack, 378; David Kroff, 373; and Harry Shinton, 371.
