The remains of a compact car are lifted onto a tow truck Friday after the driver was killed in a chain-reaction accident that occurred after he reportedly crossed into oncoming traffic lanes about 6:45 a.m. Friday. The red Geo Metro was westbound on U-201 near the 3200 West off-ramp just north of West Valley City when it swerved off the road, through the median and into eastbound traffic, said Sgt. Verdi White II of the Utah Highway Patrol. The Geo became airborne, White said, killing the driver, whose identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin. Witnesses said that just before the fatal accident, the driver appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed and flashing his lights on and off. At least four vehicles were involved in the accident, including a small truck and passenger car.
