- As Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin of the Quorum of the Twelve stood to speak in the concluding session of conference, he related that President Gordon B. Hinckley had quipped upon entering the stand in the Tabernacle with his counselors before the meeting, "We decided to come back."
Not only did the First Presidency and the other General Authorities "come back" for the culmination of the 165th Semiannual General Conference, but the Tabernacle was filled to overflowing with attentive listeners who seemed focused on the uplifting messages delivered in word and music. A cordial tone was set prior to the session as people pressed onto the narrow benches. "We've got plenty of room for another friend," said one, as he made way for a man to squeeze in and sit next to his wife and daughter.
President Thomas S. Monson, first counselor in the First Presidency, conducted the session. Music was provided by the Tabernacle Choir, with Craig Jessop conducting and John Longhurst at the organ. Prayers were offered by Elders Rex D. Pinegar and Claudio R. M. Costa of the Seventy.
