Lueders is a University of Utah professor and editor of "Like Underground Water, the Poetry of Mid-20th Century Japan." Gleason is a student in creative writing at the university. - JEAN C. HOWARD, a Chicago performance poet, will spearhead a "Poetry Slam" at the Lazy Moon Pub, 32 Exchange Place, at 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18. Poetry Slams eventually form poetry "teams" to compete over the course of a "season." The national finals will offer $1,000 in prize money. The event is often raucous and wild, not unlike a sporting event, with cheers and groans. Locally the microphone will be open to readers at 9 p.m. Howard will present poetry videos and perform her own work.

- JOEL PASSEY will conduct at free poetry workshop on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 10:30 p.m. at the Sandy Library, 10100 Petunia Way. The two-hour workshop is sponsored by the Utah State Poetry Society.

- DEATHS: Jose Yglesias, a novelist, journalist and playwright best known for writing about Latin Americans affected by the revolutionary experience, has died in Manhattan. He was 75. The cause was cancer, said his son, the novelist and screenwriter Rafael Yglesias. Don Pendleton, whose "Executioner" series featuring Mack Boland spawned the paperback genre of men's action-adventure novels, has died at his home in Sedona, Ariz. He was 67. His wife, Linda, said the cause was a heart attack.
