Esther Amelia Cowan, 82, a resident of Salt Lake City for 72 years, died of complications from Alzheimer's disease on Thursday, November 9, 1995 at Sandy Regional Convalescent Center, Sandy, Utah.
She was born December 18, 1912 in Vingaker, Sweden, the daughter of Gustave and Gerda Anderson Greenberg. When her parents emigrated to he United States, she lived with her grandparents, Erik and Hulda Amanda Andersson. When she was 11, they also emigrated to the United States, settling in Salt Lake City, Utah. She married Ray Somerville Cowan on August 25, 1930.Mrs. Cowan was a floral designer for Pearson's Floral for over 40 years, and also worked in sales related positions. She was a member of the L.D.S. Southgate Ward, South Salt Lake Stake. Her main interests were her family, friends, and gardening. She and her close friends met weekly for many years to play cards and socialize until her health failed.
Mrs. Cowan is survived by a son, Gary, Lacey, Washington; a daughter, Barbara Christensen, West Valley City; a son, Richard, Beaver Creek, Ohio; she also raised as a daughter, Marciele Severin Foianini, after the death of her parents; a sister, Sara Pearson, Salt Lake City; half-brothers, Harry, South Jordan; and Joseph, Alpine, Utah; Ray, Salt Lake City; Robert, Taylorsville; Carl, Arizona; half-sisters, Ruby Wood and Betty DeGraffenried, Salt Lake City; Rosa King, Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray, in 1981; and son, David, in 1962.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 15, 1995 at 2:00 p.m. in the Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary Chapel, 10600 South 1700 East, Sandy, where friends may call Tuesday 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday one hour prior to the service. Interment Larkin Sunset Gardens.
