Lloyd Carr, the interim coach who has guided Michigan to an 8-2 record and a No. 12 ranking, was hired today as the Wolverines' permanent football coach.

Athletic director Joe Roberson, who made the announcement at a news conference this morning, said the length and terms of the contract would be decided after the end of the season.Carr was given the job last spring after Gary Moeller was forced to resign following a drunken incident in a suburban Detroit restaurant.
