A bomb caused heavy damage Friday at a newspaper that had reported extensively about the growth of organized crime in Lithuania.

No injuries were reported from the explosion shortly after midnight at the headquarters of Lietuvos Rytas, the largest newspaper in the former Soviet republic.Police suspected gangsters in the bombing, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported. Prime Minister Adolfas Slezevicius demanded an urgent investigation.

Later in the day, the newspaper headquarters was evacuated after an anonymous telephone caller warned of another bomb. No second explosion occurred.

The bomb apparently had been planted inside a newly built five-story annex to the main building, which was not damaged. The annex was nearly destroyed, said Algimanthas Butris, deputy chief editor of the newspaper, said.
