A stabbing victim and the man accused of trying to kill him were housed together at the Kootenai County jail, authorities say.

The two were separated after a reporter asked jail commander Capt. Travis Chaney to explain the jail arrangement."A mistake was made," Chaney said. "We are now taking measures to see what happened and trying to look at ways to not let it happen again."

John Gray, 27, whose body is scarred with 11 stab wounds allegedly inflicted by Frank Anderson, said Anderson was placed in his jail pod.

Gray added Anderson, 31, encouraged him to even the score.

"He wanted me to throw him off the tier. He told me he has it coming, but I'm not going to do it," Gray said.

"I've offered him to take a swing at me. I've offered I'd let him sock me right now if it'd make him feel better," Anderson said.

"He hugged me, and he apologized," Gray said.

Still, he said jail officers should never have put Anderson in his pod.
