The Downtown Alliance has honored individuals and organizations with its "Downtown Achievement Awards" for efforts to revive, improve and beautify Salt Lake City's center.
Honored were:Arts: Art Access/Very Special Arts Utah for its efforts to bring the arts to people with disabilities, low-income families and others who have little access to the beauty of art.
Individual Achievement: Stephen Goldsmith, executive director of Artspace, for his leadership in the downtown renovation effort that produced Artspace Rubber Co., 355 W. 200 S., which has provided housing for artists and low-income people, along with a number of other attractive new features in a formerly run-down area.
Restoration: Henderson Building/Fuggles, in association with Artspace (executive director Stephen Goldsmith) and Salt Lake Brewing Co., for renovating a block downtown that has created the new eatery, a day-care center, and 53 units of residential housing.
Urban Design: Salt Lake City Corporation and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for working together to create City Creek Park and Brigham Young Historic Park in the downtown.
Civic & Economic Development: American Stores for its new downtown headquarters.
Media: KTVX Channel 4, News 4 Utah, for its coverage of activities affecting the downtown.
Special Event: The Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring the Olympic Announcement Party.
