The U.S. Postal Service and its rural letter carriers have reached agreement on a new four-year contract with terms similar to those ordered by federation arbitration boards with two other postal unions.

The Postal Service said Monday that wages in the negotiated agreement with the 96,000-member National Rural Letter Carriers' Association "follow the pattern" established by arbitrators in decisions regarding the National Association of Letter Carriers and American Postal Workers Union. Those decisions in August and October provided for an initial lump sum payment equal to 2.78 per cent of a worker's salary in the first year, pay increases of 1.2 percent plus cost of living adjustments in the second and fourth years and a $400 cash payment and COLA adjustment in the third year.

Completion of a ratification vote on the agreement is expected in January.
