Provo High School senior Carolina Domingues, who lives near University Avenue, was worried about the pedestrian and traffic safety problems on the street.
So, she took her concerns straight to the Provo City Council.Domingues, who serves on the Provo City Youth Council as a youth court liaison, was surprised by the city's response.
At her suggestion, the city removed two of the four crosswalks on the avenue near Provo High School.
"Really, I didn't think they would do anything about it," Domingues said.
After Domingues talked the matter over with City Council chairwoman Jane Carlile, the suggestion was sent to other council members, who agreed that the street could use some changes.
Engineers from the Utah Department of Transportation did a traffic count on University Avenue near the crosswalks, and the numbers later were confirmed by Provo city engineer Nick Jones and his department.
They found that Domingues was right - there were too many cross-walks.
In addition, the city is putting more striping at the remaining cross-walks.
By removing two of the crosswalks and relocating a few bus stops, Carlile said the city will be alleviating a traffic bottleneck.
