UCLA coach Jim Harrick has already laid down the law for the rest of the season: Do what I say.
Harrick revealed his edict 24 hours after the Bruins, the defending national champions, were beaten by Santa Clara in the first round of the Maui Invitational."They might have had an idea of how they were going to play," he said after UCLA defeated Wisconsin 78-69 on Tuesday in a consolation-round game. "It didn't work. So we're going to play it my way."
The eight-team, three-day tournament ends Wednesday with No. 3 Villanova squaring off against 20th-ranked North Carolina in the title game.
In other games Santa Clara plays Michigan State for third place, the Bruins plays Vanderbilt for fifth and Wisconsin plays Division II Chaminade, the host school.
Four returning UCLA veterans took charge against the Badgers. J.R. Henderson led the way with 19 points and nine rebounds, Toby Bailey added 18 and Charles O'Bannon had 17.
Villanova beat Santa Clara 77-65 and North Carolina defeated Michigan State 92-70. In the other consolation game, Vanderbilt routed Chaminade, 95-71.
Kerry Kittles had 23 and 13 rebounds and Alvin Williams added 12 for Villanova, whose game plan was to keep high-scoring guard Steve Nash on the outside.
Great Alaska Shootout
When the Great Alaska Shootout tips off this afternoon in Anchorage, Alaska, it will mark the return of one of the game's great coaches and the beginning of a family feud for another.
The 18th annual Shootout will mark Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski's first time back on the sidelines after a bad back put him on the disabled list halfway through last season.
And when Duke plays Old Dominion in a first-round matchup, Blue Devil guard Jeff Capel will face a Monarchs squad coached by his father, Jeff Capel.
Preseason NIT
It will be tough to beat tonight's Preseason NIT semifinal between No. 5 Georgetown and No. 25 Georgia Tech, a game that features two of college basketball's best young point guards.
Allen Iverson, the Big East's rookie and defensive player of the year last season as a freshman, is the old man of the duo. Stephon Marbury was one of the nation's top high school players last season and he gets the advantage of returning home for the game at Madison Square Garden.
