Registration by computer - new this year at Utah Valley State College - saved the day when the school's telephone registration system failed to interface with a new, more-efficient student information system, according to Ryan Thomas, vice president of student services and computing.

Programmers had to write a new interface program so the telephone system and student information system could communicate, Ryan said. That took about 10 days and slowed down registration. The system is up and running now, and registration numbers have reached about 6,000.Ryan said the total registration for the winter semester is a little off so far because of the glitch. He estimates about a third of the registrations thus far were by the new computer registration system and the rest by traditional methods. Students may go to a number of open computer labs on campus and register for their next semester classes.

Last semester, a record 14,041 students registered for classes at UVSC.
