The shooting death of a 14-year-old Layton boy on Wednesday afternoon has been ruled accidental, according to investigators from the Layton Police Department.

Police say Fernando Miguel Hernandez, 1543 Marilyn Dr., was examining a handgun he thought was not loaded when it went off just after noon Wednesday. The bullet struck him in the head.He was taken to Primary Chlildren's Medical Center by helicopter and died about three hours later, police said.

The incident was witnessed by the victim's 11-year-old brother, police said, who told investigators that Hernandez believed the gun to be unloaded as he handled it.
