The Utah State Developmental Center needs volunteers to help developmentally disabled residents enjoy several holiday events.

Seventy-five volunteers are needed to help wheelchair-bound and other residents at a holiday program on the Developmental Center campus Saturday, Dec. 9, at 1:30 p.m. or at 3 p.m.The Alpine District Training School, located on the Utah State Developmental Center campus in American Fork, is looking for a volunteer group that would be willing to provide a Christmas activity for 25 developmentally disabled students.

"We would appreciate any group that would be willing to plan a two-hour activity and an opportunity for the students to visit with Santa and receive a few inexpensive but appropriate gifts during that time," said Thom Anderson, director of Project Advocacy.

For those interested, the school has tentatively scheduled Dec. 19 or Dec. 20 from 1 to 3 p.m. for their holiday party. Anderson said residents benefit in multiple ways from contact with new friends.

Other volunteer opportunities in Utah County include:

- Decorate a Christmas tree at a transitional group home. Individuals recovering from mental illness would enjoy a group willing to provide or make decorations and decorate their Christmas tree.

- Volunteer for the American Cancer Society. Several volunteers are needed to staff the office, answer phones and perform basic computer work for flexible blocks of time Monday through Friday. Volunteers will also be invited to help with special projects.

- Become a "Family Friend." Easter Seals needs volunteers 55 years and older to befriend families who have children with disabilities. Opportunities exist in communities across Utah County.

- Help update information at Provo City Public Library. Volunteers with computer skills or an interest in learning basic computer skills are needed to help update information Tuesdays, or Thursdays for flexible blocks of time between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
